I spent the morning near Changmai in a lovely wat (temple) learning more about an important and fascinating project directed by Lauri Maund. Lauri, originally from Australia, has lived in Thailand for about thirty-seven years. Through ongoing workshops, he helps monks from various Asian countries to better deal with the difficulties of HIV in their local communities. The monks I met yesterday were from Burma and Sri Lanka, all of whom were most engaging and I am ever more encouraged to visit their country this year. In the included photograph, the monks have created a mock-up ‘neighborhood community map’ and are discussing positive ways, using Buddhist precepts, in which they can be most effective in assisting the people of their respective communities.
