From the Eye of the Elephant to the Heart of the Human…

CELEBRATING…

A Book of Twenty-four Paintings by Ten Elephants  / Introduction, poem, and short story by Galen Garwood

Greetings Everyone,

I moved to Thailand in 2000, specifically to continue my independent film project, PANOM, Cousin to the Clouds, which I’d been working on since 1998. This was essentially motivated by a powerful epiphany I received after reading an article about the plight of the Asian elephant.  I completed the film in 2007, moving on to various other projects associated with the elephant, and, of course, I continue to satisfy the muses of my imagination in both painting and writing.

To begin my 25th year celebration (2025-26), I’m launching From the Eye of the Elephant, featuring twenty-four paintings created by ten elephants. The book is dedicated to my friend Richard Lair (1943-2024) and his decades of work toward the understanding and conservation of the Asian elephant.

From a recent second epiphany, perhaps from the same voice, From the Eye of the Elephant seems the perfect symbolic gift-exchange to celebrate this quarter of a Century, supporting collaborative efforts to preserve cultural heritage and developing awareness of the environment through story, music, and art.

When you purchase a copy of From the Eye of the Elephant through Galen’s Bookshop, a significantly greater percentage of the profit is returned to me, supporting my art, the projects I’m involved with, and my dedication to art and the environment. With the purchase of this book, you’ll be supporting The Akha Oral Tradition School by Cultural Crossroads Asia, a non-profit multicultural initiative in Northern Thailand whose mission is to promote the preservation of ancestral cultures. Thirty percent of the sales of this book will be dedicated to Cultural Crossroads Asia.

While Galen’s Bookshop purchases are only available to those living in the US or UK, From the Eye of the Elephant is also available through global distribution. If you live in the UK or the US, please consider supporting my efforts by visiting The Bookshop. Otherwise, I recommend buying it from Powell’s Books.

Every little bit helps.

Additionally, I invite you to purchase one or more from a selection of eleven elephant paintings rendered as a 16″ x 20″ Giclee print on museum archival paper.  Because of the unusual global complications of tariffs, I now work with high quality printers in both the US and in Thailand. Thirty percent of sales will also be dedicated to Cultural Crossroads Asia. Check out the PDF and if you’re interested, please send me a message. I’ll respond ASAP.

Something else to share….

Midway through this journey, I had the delightful honor to interview  eight-year-old Hjalmar Boyesen about his painting of an elephant. His prescient understanding of this world we live in is remarkable; it gives me hope. I invite you to watch this heart moving short video.

Thank you for your support!
